Mac vs PC: From a Gadgenista’s Point of View

by Lia on May 11th, 2007

Hmm, Mac or PC?

I’ve always been a PC user ever since I was born.

But ever since I started working in the Media and Advertising industry, it seems like everyone in the industry uses a Mac!

Even at our workplace, my station is an iMac G5 and my boss owns a MacBook Pro and everyone else owns either another MacBook Pro or Powerbook on an iBook.

And so, I was introduced to the world of Macs :)

At the start after getting my first feel of a Mac, I instantly loved it. It took a while for me to get around, but once I got the hang of it, I loved Mac’s simplicity.

I loved how it made things easier and how everything is so automated.

I love how you can just drag photos in the email and resize it right there and then. No need for you to open Photoshop or any other Image editors to resize.

Mac’s drag and drop interface is so much better and efficient than the PC’s.

Installing and uninstalling applications are a breeze, too.

But just two days ago, my young love for Mac was tested.

My boss recently bought a new IDE HD which was working fine for about 2 days. And then just yesterday when we tried it out, Mac couldn’t read it.

It got the “This disk couldn’t not be read by this computer.” error.

Unfortunately, the new HD had data that we couldn’t afford losing. I’ve searched high and low for a Mac Recovery File Software but I ended in vain because most (if not all) required purchasing.

In the end, it was my PC that saved the day. I bought the HD home and managed to recover all the data using a freeware called PC INSPECTOR File Recovery.

This whole event made me start thinking again whether I should still get a Mac or just opt for a PC instead.

One reason why I wanted a Mac because Macs were more fashionable back then.

Sleek design. Sexy white color.

But PCs right now are coming out with fashionable laptops, too.

There’s the pink Sony Vaio. And there are so many decal sites out there that can skin your PC laptops to your liking.

So why should I still get a Mac?

Admittedly, PCs crash more and are “messier” inside. But to tell you the truth, being a Geek at heart, I love the intricacies of a PC. I love going thru registries and I love trying to get rid of those annoying viruses every other geeks come up with.

There are times when I think, “Mac is so simple that it actually becomes complicated.”

It’s like Mac is so simple, that sometimes I feel a bit constrained, believe it or not *sheepish grin*

But then I believe that, I may be speaking a little bit too soon since Mac and I have a pretty fresh relationship and I should give it a chance.

I still have yet a lot to explore about Mac.

But I will always have warm feelings for PC ;)

So, should I get a PC or a Mac? :)

With Macs coming out with Intel chips, you can now dual-boot with Windoze. Best of both worlds, see?

    So get a Mac!

    Hi Lia!

Get a mac ;-) Just like what they said earlier… you can have the best of both worlds ;-)

Regarding the recovery problem… you have to remember that mac has the internals of a UNIX. There are actually a lot of free and a couple of open source recovery apps made for UNIX that you can take advantage of.

i have difficulties programming with my Mac OSX, but designing in it is a breeze.

i switch to the Windows XP (still inside my mac, and it doesn’t know that it resides in a mac) whenever i need to program something…and i use it to play games. haha! or read *.exe files that my mac can’t read.

i would’ve loved the beautiful sony vaio…if it weren’t for the fact that i have yet to meet one that isn’t dead beyond warranty.

my macbook already flew so many times, even while the OS is still on, but it’s still alive. and the one time that the CD drive went wonky, it was replaced immedately. the warranty covered it even though it’s really technically my fault that the drive went bonkers.

You could’ve tried FileSalvage for Mac. :)

Anyway, as for simplicity of the Mac, I agree. It never became complicated for me. I regularly check Macupdate.com to get my new freewares and sharewares. :)

I love Menustrip and Popcopy. They’re not built in to Tiger, but with it, I get more functionality in my menu bar.

And I didnt the the ddefault font on the menu bar so I use Silk to change the font from Lucida Grande to Calibri (yeah, that’s Vista’s default font. lol).

    Anyway, just sharing. Haha

uhm, question, if i make a ‘document’ in mac and like send it to my teacher who uses a windows. will she be able to read it? does mac have powerpoint and such?

  • Lia

hi xstellax :) Yup, there’s a MS office for Mac :)

  • Tech Box Philippines

As what Lia just mentioned… Yes there is an MS office for Mac. Microsoft Office 2008 which is for Mac is actually even a newer release than that of the Windows version which is Office 2007.

If you will be using Office 2008, remember to save your files as Office 2003 format just to make sure that your teacher will be able to open it just in case she is not using Office 2007 yet.

On the other hand… Most Mac users prefer to use Apple Keynote instead of the Microsoft Powerpoint.

Both Office 2008 for Mac and Apple’s iWork 2008 suite (Apple’s version of Microsoft Office) have trial versions which you can try out before you actually buy the software.
