Gadgenista Decoded: Issue #01

Remember my old post, “Are You One Of Us“?
I spoke of the Gadgenista as an individual who chooses NOT the best gadget in the market but the best gadget that fits his personality.
But how can we exactly choose the best gadget in the market if we don’t exactly understand the terminologies that surround that gadget?
Ofcourse, how a gadget looks is a big factor in choosing. Gadgenistas SHOULD (no question about that!) always have a fabulous looking gadget, but ofcourse, it should be functional as well!
Take LAPTOPS for example.
With all the sweet-looking laptops gracing the market, and headlines such as “Intel Santa Rosa Revealed” filling the technology news, or spec pages saying “MacBook Pro is built on the revolutionary Intel Core 2 Duo“…
Do we REALLY understand what they mean? Or are we just going with the flow that since they SOUND good, they must BE good… Right?
*Bzzzzt* Wrong answer!
Ok, I’m here to give you girls (and maybe some guys) a little crash course on some of those scary and intimidating terminologies that go alongside laptops.
I don’t think anyone have any problems with looks right?
We definitely know what looks good or not because Gadgenistas have fabulous TASTE!
So let’s go to the more technical part, explained in a not-so technical way!
The Processor.
The Processor is the heart of our laptops! Without it, our laptops will not work.
Processors basically control how fast our computers can run applications and our processors have chips in them.
Before, our processors used to have only a single chip.
Those were the Pentium days.
Now, Intel came up with a new platform for the processor and called it Core Duo.
It’s called Core Duo simply because instead of having one (1) chip, processors nowadays have two (2)!
Now why is having 2 chips better than having 1 chip?
It’s like this.
Pentium Scenario:
You’re a make-up artist. Usually on a tight budget photo shoot, you have 2 roles. First, do the model’s make-up; Second, fix the hair. That definitely takes longer.
The Core Duo scenario would be:
You have a make-up artist to do the make-up and a separate hairstylist to do the hair simultaneously!
Now with two people doing two things at the same time, things will get done faster!
Better multi-tasking feature!
Now you ask… What is Core 2 Duo?
To keep it simple. Core 2 Duo is just a better version of Core Duo. Not necessarily faster, but definitely more efficient.
So what should u get… a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo?
If you asked me that question like a year ago, I would have a hard time answering you.
But now, I would definitely say get the Core 2 Duo since it’s cheaper nowadays than the Core Duo and Intel is already starting to phase out it out anyway.
While we’re still on the topic of processors, let’s tackle Santa Rosa.
Remeber my post about the Sony Vaio CR?
That yummy eye-candy of a laptop boasts of having the Intel Santa Rosa chip line.
Now what is Santa Rosa? It’s basically the kind or the platform of the chip inside the processor. Having a Santa Rosa chipset simply means 1) better performance and 2) better battery life
Now isn’t that so easy?!
The RAM.
No, I’m not talking about goats. I’m talking about Random Access Memory.
RAM is usually used when we switch from one application to another. The more RAM we have in our computer, the better it can handle application switching and the more chances that it WON’T crash or hang when you try to open a gazillion applications ALL at the same time.
The more RAM your laptop has, the better!
*scrolls up*
Whew, this a pretty long article now!
Next time, I’ll be tackling WXGA and stuff so lookout for another issue of my Gadgenista Decoded!
