10 Reasons Why NOT To Get An iPhone

by Lia on June 29th, 2007

Apple iPhoneOk, I’m sort of joining the iPhone bandwagon!

NO… I don’t have an iPhone (I wish!).

It’s only going to be available in Asia in 2008 so I’m just riding along with the gazillions of reviews on the internet.

Anyway, frankly speaking, I’m not pee-ing in my pants to get my hands on an iPhone (well, for the meantime anyway!)

And here are the reasons why:

10. No Stylus. Finger-tapping or finger-flicking could be the newest thing with touch-screen gadgets, but I just find it plain… messy! Just think of the fingerprint markings! The iPhone comes with a cloth for cleaning, thus proving a point! Unless, scientists find a way for humans to stop secreting oil, I think an option to either use a stylus or your fingers should be provided.

9. No Physical Keyboard. Call me old school, but I’ve read numerous complaints about how hard it is to use the virtual keyboard of the iPhone. They say, we better get used to typing with one finger! Plus, imagine the downtime when we have to wait for the virtual keyboard to load just to type things up instead of being able to access a physical keyboard at once.

8. No Memory Expansion Slot. 8 gig is just enough for a iPod Nano. But if you’re going to combine a phone, a camera, a mini computer and an iPod into one gadget, I think it deserves more than 8 gigs!

7. No 3G. Isn’t 3G supposed to be the newest technology in high-speed transfer? For a phone that’s supposed to be revolutionary, an iPhone should atleast have 3G technology. It does have EDGE technology, but it’s nothing comparable to 3G.

6. iPhone cannot record videos. It can certainly take photos, but unfortunately for videophiles, you are in for a great disappointment. And with the boom of YouTube.com and all those video blogs and sites, its just really weird why video recording wasn’t included in the iPhone’s features!

5. Music can’t be used as a Ringtone. Again, something I can not comprehend. You’re supposed to be able to store thousands of songs in your iPhone… but you won’t be able to use a single one as a ringtone?! Preposterous!

4. No way to cut, copy or paste. As a PDA phone user, this is something I can NOT live without. It makes editing contacts so much easier, among other things!

3. No MMS. This is definitely a BIG NO-NO in the Philippines where MMS downloads constitute a big chuck of the mobile industry business. So how are we supposed to send photos to other people now? Email? Not in the Philippines where data transfer fees are absurdly high!

2. Activation of phone plan is via iTunes. Currently, that’s how it is with AT&T. If they’re going to apply the same procedure in the Philippines, then Philippines should be given access to iTunes in the near future. For now, Philippine subscribers aren’t allowed to create iTunes accounts.

And the number 1 main reason…

1. iPhones can’t use digital cards (also known as sim card). Well, that basically seals the fate of iPhones here in the Philippines (for now anyway). Even if you go to the US to get one, you won’t be able to use it here anyway since it’ll only work on an AT&T Network. Ofcourse, it’s still available thru the roaming plan, but your phone bill would simply ridiculously expensive! There has been discussions whether it’ll be able to use sim cards in the near future, but if not, I wonder which Telecom here in the Philippines will be able to get the iPhone?

Edit: Apple iPhones apparently do HAVE sim cards… which are ofcourse, sim-locked to AT&T at the moment. So even if you do get an Apple iPhone NOW, it’s still going to be quite useless… unless you use a prepaid AT&T line, which ofcourse is still mighty expensive. So I guess we all have to wait till 2008, honeys!

So there!

Even though the iPhone is one of the sexiest mobile phone in the planet up-to-date, (and revolutionary according to Steve Jobs) I still think that it could probably take two or more versions before I get convinced to actually purchase one.

But ofcourse… freebies are always welcome. Hehehehehe.

    Hey Lia!!!

Mukhang nahuli ka na sa balita. :-)

10 & 9. Keyboard - I was worried about this as well. Then I read reviews that it’s easy to use and this video finally convinced me…

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/keyboard.html

Wow! As fast as typing in a Treo!

    8. Yup, of course so you’ll still buy an iPod!

    7. 3G has been explained as eating too much battery. Also, there’s news they upgraded the EDGE so it’s uberfast now!!!

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/28/atandt-customers-seeing-sudden-boost-in-edge-speeds/

    6. iPhone video.. watch out, that’ll just be software.

    5. Music as Ringtone… rumor has it that you can, but you pay at the iTunes store.

    4. Copy and Paste… i got nothing. :-)

    3. MMS? I barely get 3 MMS in a month. Email puede pa.

    2. Yup US muna. I actually find this a plus, you can go home and do it at your own time.

    1. Aha! The final one! Yes it has a SIM Card Slot!!!! Check it out here!

Of course, still SIM locked. But I bet you our Greenhills guys can crack it in 60 days!

    La lang. :-)

    Leo

P.S. Painggit lang. Since I’ll be in the US this Monday, I’ll get to say Hello to the iPhone. Hehehehe

I heard Steve (naks, close) will be giving out free 8GB iPhones to his employees who’ve been with the company for more than a year.

@Leo, thanks for the updates! But I still yet have to be convinced.. the only reason why I wrote about the iPhone is because everyone’s writing about it and today’s the release! Hahahhahaha! :)

As for the ringtone thingie, that’s still absurb, having to buy tones in iTunes!

For now, I’d still go with my m600i and separate iPod video heheh! :)

I just read today in an article from Reuters, that iPhone does have a new surprise with it, and that is 3G.

I can’t wait to hear how it performs for real users before I plop down $500+ to purchase this latest gadget!

AND what sucks even more, is that I have 5 months left of my current A T & T contract, so my price would even be higher, as I am not ready for an official upgrade. Fingers crossed that they are letting current subscribers upgrade to get iPhone at any time.
